Inelia Garcia
Pre-Pilates for Seniors
16 classes for the Pilates professional to prepare the older student's body before the first class, and give them back autonomy, strength, and confidence to move through daily life.
Directly from the lineage Joseph Pilates → Romana Kryzanowska → Inelia Garcia.
Every class is taught by Inelia herself, recorded in Portuguese, the language she teaches in, and dubbed into English. You watch and listen entirely in English, with exactly the same content her Brazilian students study.
Who Teaches
I received this method from Romana Kryzanowska, who received it directly from Mr. Pilates. I spent 21 years by her side, applying what I saw in her care for students from 60 to 90 years old. That care is what's organized, class by class, in Pre-Pilates for Seniors.

How Each Class Is Taught
With the older student, the Method's six principles don't follow the usual order. Every class begins with concentration, to bring the student into the present, into their own body. Then comes centering, with priority on spinal alignment through the Power House. Only then comes precision, directed at the weakest muscles, and breathing. Control and flow come as a consequence, not as a starting point.
Evidence
What the Research Showed
In 2011, a study followed women over 65 and measured how many times they fell. Those who practiced Pilates fell less. It's published data (Gonul et al., 2011), one of the five studies that guide the method behind Pre-Pilates for Seniors.
Autonomy, here, means very specific things, and each one can be observed, exercise by exercise:
- Walk without leaning on furniture
- Sit down on a chair and stand up without asking for help
- Climb a step without leaning the torso forward
- Get out of bed alone, controlling the weight of the body
